The Enduring Popularity Of HO Model Trains

While there are some model train lovers who like having a garden train out in their yards, and others who’ve dedicated whole attics and basements to huge, detailed, layouts, there are plenty of other hobbyists who don’t have the space for these. But we still want to be able to use more than one layout, or do more than just a simple oval. What can you do if you love trains, but don’t want a huge one? There are plenty of options. The huge number of different people who use model trains means that manufacturers have made tracks and trains in just about every size conceivable. It doesn’t matter whether you have a whole back yard or just the top of your desk. O is one of the most popular sizes of model trains, at about a 1:48 scale ratio in relation to real trains. These use 1 1/4″ gauge tracks. Just like G scale trains, O models are often used for outdoor displays. But not everyone has the space for a garden railroad, or the time to maintain it. If you’d like something a little smaller, but still nicely detailed, you’re after an Ho Model Train. About half the size of O scale trains, at about 1:87 of a real one, HO stands for half O. These use standard gauge train tracks, and are very easy to find. They’re a very popular choice for floor layouts, and are suitable for creative ones that use plenty of track, but they don’t take up too much space. They’re still big enough to be durable, too. These trains offer a good balance of the detail of the larger scales of train and the smaller space requirement of the tiny models such as N scale trains. Because of this, they have managed to remain the most popular scale. This scale did not become popular overnight; when they were first introduced to hobbyists in the UK in the 1930s, they failed to catch on due to the popularity of OO scale trains. When HO scale model trains came to the US around 1950 however, they quickly caught on and are a favorite with model train enthusiasts to this day. More than 65% of hobbyists prefer this scale. Since this is the most popular scale, it is the easiest to find trains, tracks, accessories and premade layouts for; virtually every company who produces model trains and accessories manufactures them in this scale. For the hobbyist who wants model trains which offer plenty of detail, are easy to find and easy to build creative layouts for in a reasonable amount of space, HO scale trains are the way to go.

These are a larger scale, but not quite as large as the G scale trains often seen in outdoor layouts; however, they are also used for this purpose.

This is an N scale model railroad. I found this layout in “TheTrain.org David’s world of N-Scale. While most of the trackage and some of the buildings are the same, the simularity ends there. All of the scenery is new and some of the internal buildings are new to the layout. Currentyl two trains are running in DC mode simultaneously, one has sound which can be heard in the video. The layout will be converted to DCC in the near future. This video was captured on my Verizon Blackberry on 8/26/2010 and runs for about 7-1/2 minutes. I’m retired and do model trains as a hobby. This layout took about a year to complete as a part-time project. Everything is still pretty pristine. I haven’t aged the buildinds, trains and layout yet. I’m “N_ScaleGuy” on Twitter. I’d like to hear from train modelers & share train videos.

This is my N Scale layout I have no DCC my scenery is very basic and I have no timeline other than all my stuff is fallen flags mostly Great Northern.Does anyone know how to make atlas switches quiet so I don,t get the loud buzz click??,or is that nature of the beast??Ahh yes the particulars. The table is 3ftX7ftx6ft LI made it from what I call presentation board. It is 1/2 in thick foam board with a heavy paper backing and a paper/foil front and is extremely strong.Where to get it ??I don’t know I found it in a dumpster. This stuff is very rigid and holds track nails very tight making mind changing very easy. Well enjoy all cheers, jeers and suggestions accepted.

Learning About G Scale Model Trains

G scale trains belong to the larger-scale models category of model trains. The G scale is one of the largest train replicas in the model train and railroading world. It is even the biggest of the most popular model trains. The G scale model ratio is 1:22. This means that the replica is only twenty two times smaller than its real-life cousin. If you think about it, other models and scales are a whole lot smaller. The O scale, for instance, also belongs to the larger scale models but is just about half the size of G scale model trains – only 1:48 in ratio. To compare, O scale model trains are 16.1 inches long and 3.6 tall; while G scale models are 26.7 inches long and about half a foot high. G scale model trains were developed by Paul Lehmann Patetnwerk, head of the German company Lehmann Gross Bahn – also known by two other names: LGB, or as known in English, Lehmann Big Train. LGB has manufactured model trains since 1881 and has an American branch called LGB America.

Due to its considerable size, most model train and railroaders affectionately refer to the G scale model trains as if it stands for “garden”. The letter actually stands for groß, which in German means “big”. For G scale model trains, No.1 tracks are used – so do other larger scale trains. The gauge, or the width of the No.1 track, is about 45 millimeters.

G scale model trains are durable ones, so if you’re planning on having a railroad track in your backyard, it would be a great scale to choose. The tracks of G scale models are made of brass. These won’t require you to do a lot of maintenance. You can simply wipe it with a clean cloth, and the track will be good for plenty of runs. If you have some space in your home, you can put your G scale model train indoors.

Two of the best G scale model train and track manufacturers are Bachmann and Aristocraft. The durability that G scale mode trains are well known for can be put to good use. For instance, it can be introduced to kids by their parents who are model train enthusiasts as well – without the worry for the train getting broken. This makes for a good medium for the family to bond. Smaller scales like the 4.8 inch high 1.1 inch tall N scale models will easily get destroyed by kids, who do not know gentleness towards toys, as opposed to the sturdy G scale – so the latter is a getter choice overall.

Model train and railroading has been around for a long time and manufacturers have created different scales for you to choose which one you like best. This includes the G scale model trains.

Best Informations What Are N Scale Model Trains?

Becoming involved with model trains is similar to any other hobby and when you originally start you are exposed to terms and technical information that you have not heard about at worse or maybe just truly never knew what they meant, kind of like scales and gauges. As you dive farther into model trains you could think that it’d be not possible for you to build your own layout, views included! I’m able to assure you, it is irrelevant what you suspect in the beginning because if you stick it out your knowledge and appreciation of the terms and techniques in the model train world will grow together with your faith in your capabilities.

starting with model trains sometimes starts with a vivid imagination, the model train enthusiast imagines the ideal train running thru the perfect views, consistently thinking of one thing, size! The situation can get a little complicated because there are plenty of makers concerned in the manufacturing of trains and train track. In this case choice is a nice thing because you can find the perfect train size for the space you have available. Scale and gauge are concepts that were created to ensure that any kind of train would fit on the same gauge track which gives the model train enthusiast a large amount of adaptability when it comes to buying engines, cars and tracks. When talking about the dimensions of a train engine and automobiles, train hobbyists are referring to the size of the train. Scale is called a ratio between life like model and the model train and has been given special letters like N Scale Model Trains.

When having a look at an N scale model train you are working with the smaller size model trains. Actually N scale is the smallest size model train out of the 4 possible model train scales. The accepted ratio for N trains is 1:160. An alternate way of saying proportion is,’the n scale train is one sixtieth the size of a life like real train. Many people are acquainted with HO, think about the N scale trains to be about half the scale of HO. In real terms HO has a ratio of 1:87.
N scale model train sets are a comparatively new comer to the model train world considering O scale, HO scale and the standard scale have been in existence for close to a century. Remember the term’gauge’ always alludes to the size of the track a model train operates on. Gauge always is the measurement of the gap between the rails of any train track. Another term that impacts on the way trains operate is’Code’ which is the actual height of the track rail.

perhaps it’s my personality but model trains can become addictive and the N scale model train sets are just one of the numerous selections for setting up your model train track layout and scenery layout. Though your liberty to choose is usually dictated by the space you have available, it your space is restricted, N scale trains could be the perfect fit! A modern mantra of our day is size matters , however , irrespective of the model train size that you finally pick I know you may enjoy the experience massively.

What Model Train Information You Need

Before you start building a model train layout you will need a lot of information. You have a lot of decision to make about your layout. Model train information can be found several different ways. You can subscribe to magazines on train modeling, or go to the library. Most libraries have model magazines you can read for free. Also you can find model train books on any type or gauge of model train you may want to model. One of the most popular model magazines is the Model Railroader. This magazine stated it publication in 1910. Get as much information as you can, before beginning your layout. All of these books and magazines just give ideas of what you can model. It will be left up to you to decide what you are going to model.

The first thing you need to decide is what scale you are going to model in. This may be decided by the amount of space you have for your layout, or it could be decided by maybe a train set that you may already have. Also this could be decided just because you like a certain size train. This is for you to figure out. You are the one in control. Once you decide what scale you need you can narrow you information down to this scale. You can find books on just the scale you are modeling or you can buy books that cover all scales. Model trains come in many different scales. The smallest is Z scale. This scale has a ratio of 1:220. The N scale is next with a ratio of 1:160. The most popular scale is HO which stands for half of O. This scale has a ratio of 1:87. The O scale has a ratio of 1:48 and is twice the size of HO. The next scale is a very popular scale for outdoor modeling. This scale is the G scale also known as the Garden scale. There are many scale smaller, larger, or in between theses scale but, these are the most popular.

Now that you have your scale, you will need to find a track plan and decide what type of terrain your train will be running on and through. You can find a ton of books with track plans. Also you can even find free track plans from many track manufacturers. Atlas model train manufacturer even offer free software to design you own layout. This software is designed for you to use Atlas track. Once you get you track planned, you will need to model the surrounding area of your layout. You can model forest, fields, meadows, rivers, mountains, farms, towns, and even city landscapes. When building your layout, remember that a railroad needs a reason to exist. For example you might want to model a coal mining operation. Your train would be hauling coal to a coal processing plant. Another thing you could model would be a passenger train hauling people from one town to another. You would need passenger stations where you passengers could catch the train. These are things you need to consider when you start modeling your layout. The most important information is to always have fun.

Thank you,

Making O Scale Train Layouts

Building model trains in the eyes the non-hobbyists may seem to be simple, a stuff that can be done even by fumbling ten-year olds. However, if they just sit and observe closer at how this is done, they will surely realize that this not just any hobby but rather serious and meticulous way of having fun. Indeed, this is not a small boy’s task. The skills and creativity involved in the entire process could only be seen from adults. Therefore, if you are already beyond the childhood age, building small model trains can be just the kind of hobby that you will want to do in your spare time.

One of the fun things about building model trains is when you are trying to make O scale train layouts. This is actually the part where you can prove the point that this hobby is only good for boys who are already in their adult years. Making a layout, after all, is not much different to designing your own home or planning a city. It needs to a clear sense of detail and organization. In fact, you should not sit down, bring out everything from the model train kit box and start busying yourself with it. Just like any architect or engineer, the first thing that you should lay your hands on is a piece of paper and a pen.

Actually, you should not even limit yourself with just a design that can fit into just a piece of paper. You could have a lot of wonderful ideas that you may just be confused about what you should do next. If the kit allows you to create as many designs as possible, then spend more time putting your ideas into paper first. It is actually less tiresome to change or improve your ideas while these are still on paper rather than when these are already in the form of miniature trains and structures already.

Most train model kits already have the layouts included in the box. This means that you do not have to trouble yourself thinking about the right O scale train layouts. However, if you just stick to these only, you will certainly be bored constructing and seeing the same designs after some time. What you certainly need to do is to free yourself from the imposed designs on the model train kit. Instead, you should learn how to broaden your mind and create your designs as freely as possible. It is only when you do so that you will really get to enjoy the hobby more.

Of course, brilliant ideas for scale train layouts do not just appear in your imagination. These are also inspired or influenced by what you have seen previously. The key, therefore, is to read books or to surf the web and visit model train hobbyist sites. Study as many layouts as possible and think of way that you can modify these. Once you are done with this part, it will be a lot easier for you to come up with your own original design.
